What is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is inflammation and irritation of the edges of both eyelids. Oil glands at the base of the eye lashes become blocked, causing redness and irritation. It is often a chronic condition, which makes it difficult to treat. Blepharitis is not contagious and does not cause sight damage.

What are the different types of Blepharitis?

Anterior Blepharitis:

Affects the outside front edge of the eyelid, where the eyelashes are attached.
Often caused by bacteria (usually Staphylococcus) or seborrheic dermatitis, a condition associated with dandruff of the scalp or eyebrows.

Posterior Blepharitis:

Affects the inner edge of the eyelid, in contact with the eye.
Often caused by problems with the meibomian glands, which produce oil that lubricates the eyes. This can lead to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).
Associated with skin conditions like rosacea or seborrheic dermatitis.

What are the causes of Blepharitis?

The following are the causes of blepharitis:

Bacterial infections: Bacteria, usually Staphylococcus, can infect the eyelid margins.

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD): Blocked or poorly functioning meibomian glands, which produce oil to lubricate the eye, can lead to irritation.

Seborrheic dermatitis: A skin condition causing dandruff, which can also affect the eyelids.

Rosacea: A chronic skin condition that can affect the face and eyelids, contributing to blepharitis.

Allergic reactions: Allergies to eye makeup, contact lens solutions, or environmental factors can trigger inflammation.

Lice or mites: Infestation with tiny mites can also cause or contribute to blepharitis.

What are the symptoms of Blepharitis?

The typical signs and symptoms of blepharitis:

Red, swollen eyelids

Itching or irritation around the eyes

Crusting or flaking at the base of the eyelashes

Gritty or burning sensation in the eyes

Watery eyes or dry eyes

Sensitivity to light

Eyelids sticking together, especially in the morning

Loss of eyelashes or abnormal eyelash growth in some cases

Frequent blinking or eye rubbing

Is there treatment available for Blepharitis?

To treat and prevent blepharitis:

Eyelid Hygiene:

Warm Compresses: Apply a warm, damp cloth to the eyelids for 5–10 minutes, 2–4 times daily. This helps to soften crusts and loosen clogged oil in the glands.
Eyelid Scrubs: Gently clean the eyelid margins with a cotton swab or clean cloth dipped in a solution of baby shampoo diluted with water, or use over-the-counter eyelid wipes specifically designed for this purpose.

Artificial Tears:

Over-the-counter lubricating eye drops can help relieve dryness and discomfort associated with blepharitis, particularly in cases of dry eye.

Antibiotics:

Topical Antibiotics: If the condition is caused by a bacterial infection, a clinician may prescribe antibiotic ointments or drops.

Steroid Eye Drops or Ointments:

In cases of severe inflammation, short-term use of steroid eye drops or ointments may be prescribed to reduce redness and swelling.
