What is Thrush (Yeast infection)?

Thrush, also known as candidiasis, is a fungal infection caused by the overgrowth of Candida yeast, most commonly Candida albicans. Thrush can occur in various parts of the body, including the mouth (oral thrush), vagina (vaginal thrush), and other moist, warm areas of the skin.

Although it is uncomfortable, there are several ways to manage it, and there is little risk to your long-term health. Some individuals do, however have persisting symptoms that might be more challenging to cure. Your symptoms can be effectively treated by our clinicians, who can also assist you in determining the origin of your thrush.

Given that the vagina typically contains low concentrations of candida albicans, thrush is considered to affect many women at some point in their life. Once a woman has had her first period and after going through the menopause, the likelihood of developing thrush decreases. Men are also susceptible, with symptoms typically centered around the penis head.

What are the causes of Thrush?

The following are typical causes if:

You are pregnant

You are diabetic

You are taking antibiotics

Have a weakened immune system e.g. HIV

Your skin is damaged

Medication e.g. hormone replacement therapy.

You wearing tight or non-breathable clothing can create an environment conducive to yeast growth.

What are the symptoms of Thrush?

The following are typical signs and symptoms of vaginal or penile Thrush:

Itching and soreness around the vagina or penis and under head of the foreskin

Vaginal discharge (normally thick and white) or penile discharge

Burning sensation when you urinate for women

Soreness during sex for women

The vulva may appear red, swollen, and sore.

Unpleasant smell from the penis

Difficult to pull the foreskin back in men

The following are typical signs and symptoms of oral thrush:

Creamy white patches on the tongue, inner cheeks, gums, tonsils, or throat.

The affected area may be red, sore, and painful, especially when eating or swallowing.

Cracking at the Corners of the Mouth, also known as angular cheilitis.

Is there treatment for thrush?

Antifungal Medications; the primary treatment for thrush involves antifungal medications, which can be applied topically or taken orally:

Oral Thrush: Treated with antifungal mouthwashes, or oral medications like fluconazole or nystatin.

Vaginal Thrush: Treated with antifungal creams, ointments, tablets, or suppositories. Oral antifungal medications, such as fluconazole, are also commonly used.

Penile thrush: Treated with antifungal creams.

What can you do to prevent thrush?

To ease discomfort and prevent vaginal/penile thrush from recurring:

After washing, dry the area properly

Wear cotton underwear

Instead of soap, use water and an emollient

If sex is uncomfortable, avoid until symptoms clear

Take probiotics to main gut bacterial flora.

To ease discomfort and prevent oral thrush from recurring:

Rinse your mouth after using inhaled corticosteroids.

Maintain good oral hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing.

Limit the use of mouthwashes that can alter the natural flora of the mouth
