What is a Fungal skin Infection?

Fungal skin infections are caused by fungi that invade and grow in the skin, nails, or hair. These infections are common and can affect different parts of the body, leading to various symptoms like itching, redness, and rashes. Fungal infections can be superficial, affecting the skin and mucous membranes, or more deep-seated, affecting other body tissues. Fungal infections include athlete’s foot, ringworm, and intertrigo rashes. Fortunately, these infections are frequently treatable, and our clinicians will be able to explain what you can do to prevent them from recurring. It is very common to develop fungal infections on the folds of the skin (e.g. under breasts) and public places are the main place you can become infected.

What are the different types of fungal infections?

The following are types of fungal infections with their description, causes, symptoms and treatment:

Athlete’s Foot (Tinea Pedis):

Description: A fungal infection that affects the skin between the toes, the soles of the feet, and sometimes the toenails.
Symptoms: Itching, burning, and stinging sensations between the toes; peeling, cracking, and scaling of the skin; blisters or sores.
Causes: Often caused by fungi that thrive in warm, moist environments like locker rooms, showers, and swimming pools.
Treatment: Antifungal creams, powders, or sprays; keeping feet dry and clean; wearing breathable footwear.

Jock Itch (Tinea Cruris):

Description: A fungal infection of the groin area, inner thighs, and buttocks.
Symptoms: Red, itchy rash with a ring-like shape; sometimes accompanied by a burning sensation.
Causes: Often caused by the same fungi that cause athlete’s foot; spreads through direct contact or shared towels or clothing.
Treatment: Antifungal creams or powders; keeping the groin area clean and dry; avoiding tight clothing.

Ringworm (Tinea Corporis):

Description: A fungal infection that can affect various parts of the body, including the arms, legs, and torso.
Symptoms: Circular, red, scaly patches with a raised border and a clear center; intense itching.
Causes: Spread through direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person or animal, or by sharing contaminated objects.
Treatment: Topical antifungal creams; in severe cases, oral antifungal medications.

Scalp Ringworm (Tinea Capitis):

Description: A fungal infection that affects the scalp and hair shafts, more common in children.
Symptoms: Scaly, itchy patches on the scalp; hair loss in affected areas; black dots where hair has broken off.
Causes: Spread through direct contact with an infected person or contaminated objects like combs, hats, or pillows.
Treatment: Antifungal shampoos to reduce spread.

Pityriasis Versicolor (Tinea Versicolor):

Description: A common yeast infection that causes small, discolored patches of skin.
Symptoms: Patches may be lighter or darker than surrounding skin; often found on the chest, back, neck, and arms; mild itching.
Causes: Caused by Malassezia yeast that lives on the skin; overgrowth can be triggered by hot, humid weather, oily skin, or a weakened immune system.
Treatment: Antifungal creams, lotions, or shampoos; in more severe cases, oral antifungal medications.
