Ant bites can range from mild to severe, depending on the type of ant and an individual’s reaction to the bite. The black garden ant, which is the most prevalent in the UK, does not sting or bite, although wood ants, red ants, and flying ants can.

Symptoms of Ant Bites:

Flying Red Ants: Red ants in the UK can sting rather than bite. Their sting can cause a sharp pain and sometimes a mild allergic reaction.

Black Garden Ant: The black garden ant, the most common ant species in the UK, does not sting but can bite. Their bite is generally very mild.

Wood Ants: Wood ants can bite and spray formic acid into the bite, which can cause irritation.

Yellow Meadow Ant: These ants are capable of biting, but they rarely come into contact with humans since they prefer to stay underground.

Pharaoh Ants: Pharaoh ants can bite, but their bites are not known to cause significant pain or discomfort.

What are the symptoms of an Ant Bite?

Symptoms of Ant Bites:

Pain and Discomfort: Most ant bites cause immediate pain, often described as a sharp or stinging sensation.

Redness and Swelling: The area around the bite may become red, swollen, and warm to the touch.

Itching: Itching is a common symptom, which can be intense.

Blisters or Pustules: Ant stings often lead to the formation of small, pus-filled blisters within a day or two. These should not be popped, as they can become infected.

Allergic Reactions: In rare cases, some individuals may experience severe allergic reactions, known as anaphylaxis, characterized by difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, dizziness, and hives. This requires immediate medical attention.

Is there treatment available for an Ant Bite?

Most insect bites and stings diminish after a few hours or days and can be treated with over the counter medication from any pharmacy.
