Arthritis causes inflammation and pain in the joints. The most prevalent varieties of arthritis in the UK are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, but there are many others, each with its own set of symptoms and treatment choices. It becomes more common as you become older, but anyone, including children, can be affected. The symptoms of arthritis vary depending on the type of arthritis you have, and which joints are afflicted.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent type of arthritis, and it most commonly affects individuals over the age of 40, however it can affect people of any age.

Osteoarthritis causes pain, swelling, and stiffness in a joint, and you may find it difficult to move it.

It commonly affects your knees, hips, and hand joints, but it can affect any joint, and the intensity of the symptoms varies from person to person.

Rheumatoid arthritis

The following are typical signs and symptoms:

The immune system attacks the joints, usually starting with the joint’s outer coating. It has the potential to spread throughout the joint, causing it to change shape.

The most common symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis are joint pain, inflammation, and stiffness. They may feel warm and painful to touch. The most common joints affected in rheumatoid arthritis are: feet, ankles, hands, wrists and knees.

Stiffness tends to be worst in the morning due to decrease in cortisol level at night; pain generally improves as the day progresses.

Pain is worse during periods of inactivity or rest.
