Diarrhoea is a condition in which you have increased bowel movements, with watery and loose stools. It might be acute, resolving in a few days, or chronic, lasting longer and accompanied by other difficulties or conditions.

Causes of diarrhoea

The following are acute causes:

Food poisoning
Viral or bacterial illness
Allergies.

The following are chronic causes:

Irritable bowel syndrome
Inflammatory bowel diseases e.g. crohns and ulcerative colitis
Malabsorption syndromes e.g coeliac disease.

Symptoms of diarrhoea

The following are typical signs and symptoms:

Loose stools
Abdominal pain and cramps
Bloating
Fever
Dehydration.

Treatment

Acute diarrhoea usually clears itself in a few days. The most common treatment is to replenish lost fluids with plenty of water and electrolytes. Antibiotics may be prescribed to treat infections. Please see your regular doctor if diarrhoea is persisting for more than one week as you may require a stool test.
