What is Eczema?

Eczema (also known as dermatitis) is a skin disorder that causes inflammation and itching, as well as dryness and cracking. There are various forms of eczema and the most common type is ‘atopic eczema’, which occurs on your neck, hands, elbows and knees. You get eczema in patches with atopic eczema. There is no cure for the condition, but our clinicians can help treat a flare-up, treat infected eczema and help to keep the condition under control. Eczema requires long term management as this is a chronic skin condition. It is one of the most common skin disorders, particularly in children, although it can affect people of all ages.

Are there different types Eczema?

The following are the common types of dermatitis of the skin:

Seborrheic eczema– is where dry, red, scaly eczema patches develop on the scalp and sides of the eyebrows, nose and ears.

Contact dermatitis eczema (allergic eczema)– is when a part of the body, most commonly the hands, comes into contact with a particular substance, which results in red, dry, scaly and irritated skin.

Discoid eczema– is a round eczema patch. Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between this and a fungal infection (ringworm) patch.

Varicose eczema– affects the lower legs and is caused due to difficulties in the flow of blood through the leg veins.

What are the symptoms of eczema?

The following are typical signs and symptoms:

Dry/cracked/scaly skin

Itching

Dark coloured patches of skin

Eczema inflammation of skin

Crusting of the skin

Sensitive skin

The dry eczema skin appears red, rough, and inflamed, causing persistent itching and discomfort.

Constant itching can cause the skin to bleed and in the severe cases, infections may develop. Where you have eczema infected, pain and swelling develops as well as yellow spots and crusting with leaking of fluid from the skin.
