Haemorrhoids are swelling of the blood vessels in or around the bottom where the anus/rectum are. Some patients never experience any symptoms. Haemorrhoids are the result of ongoing constipation or chronic diarrhoea.

Symptoms of haemorrhoids

The following are typical signs and symptoms:

Pain on passing stools
Pain on the rectum/anus
Swelling and redness on the rectum
Itchy bottom
Fresh bright blood after passing stools
A lump hanging outside the anus.

Treatment

How to prevent or treat piles:

Have more fluids
Increase fibre in your diet, which will make the poo soft
Paracetamol for pain relief
Warm bath to help with pain and itching
Regular exercise
Reduce alcohol and caffeine to avoid constipation.
