What is Plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis (heel pain) is a common condition that causes pain in the heel and bottom of the foot. It occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of the foot and connects the heel bone to the toes, becomes inflamed or irritated. This condition is particularly common among runners, people who are overweight, and those who wear shoes with inadequate support.

What are the causes of Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis typically develops due to repeated stress and strain on the plantar fascia. Common factors that contribute to this condition include:

Overuse or Repetitive Stress: Activities that put a lot of stress on the heel and attached tissue, such as running, dancing, or standing for long periods, can lead to plantar fasciitis.

Foot Structure: Flat feet, high arches, or an abnormal walking pattern can place extra stress on the plantar fascia.

Tight Calf Muscles: Tight calf muscles can increase tension on the plantar fascia.

Obesity: Excess body weight increases the load on the plantar fascia, particularly in individuals who spend a lot of time on their feet.

Improper Footwear: Wearing shoes with poor arch support, thin soles, or inadequate cushioning can contribute to plantar fasciitis.

Age: Plantar fasciitis is most common between the ages of 40 and 60.

Occupation which requires prolonged standing/walking: Jobs that require long periods of standing or walking on hard surfaces can increase the risk of plantar fasciitis.

What are the symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis?

The following are typical signs and symptoms:

Heel Pain: Often described as a sharp, stabbing pain, typically felt on the inside of the heel where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel bone.

Morning Pain: The pain is usually worse when taking the first steps in the morning or after long periods of rest. It tends to improve with movement but may return after prolonged standing or activity.

Pain After Exercise: Pain may flare up after, not during, exercise or physical activity.

Stiffness: The foot may feel stiff, particularly after resting or in the morning.

What treatment is available for Plantar Fasciitis?

To ease the symptoms of plantar fasciitis, you can do the following:

Rest the foot (by avoiding standing or walking for long periods)

Wearing shoes with good arch support

Avoid walking barefoot

Consider purchasing insoles

Loose weight if the patient is overweight or obese

Pain relief medication e.g. paracetamol and ibuprofen

Ice packs used for 15-20mins

Self-physiotherapy to stretch the plantar fascia.
