Scabies is an itchy skin ailment caused by Sarcoptes scabiei, a small burrowing mite. Itching is severe in the region where the mite burrows. The need to itch may be particularly severe at night.

It is infectious and can spread swiftly in a household, child nursery, school class, nursing facility, or jail through close physical contact. Because scabies is extremely infectious, doctors frequently urge that whole families or contact groups be treated.

Scabies is easily treatable. Scabies mites and their eggs are killed by medications applied to the skin. However, you may have irritation for several weeks following therapy.

Symptoms of scabies

The following are typical signs and symptoms:

Thin blisters or lumps on your skin form thin, uneven burrow tracks

Itching, which is frequently intense and is generally worst at night

Burrows or tracks are frequently seen in skin creases. Though scabies may affect practically any part of body, in adults and older children, it is most often found:

Between the fingers

Under the armpits

Along the insides of the wrists and around the waist

On the inside of the elbows

On the soles of the feet

Between and under the breasts

In the vicinity of the male genital region

Around the buttocks

On the knees

Treatment

To stop the spread of the condition and what you do during treatment is as follows:

Put clothing in a sealed bag for 3 days that cannot be washed

Wash all clothing and bedding at 50C or higher.

If you’ve previously had scabies, signs and symptoms may appear within a few days of exposure. If you’ve never had scabies, it might take up to six weeks for symptoms to appear. Even if you don’t have any signs or symptoms, you might still spread scabies.

Many skin conditions, such as dermatitis or eczema, are also associated with itching and small bumps on the skin.
