Symptoms and Causes of Shoulder Pain

If the shoulder pain is ongoing for longer than 2 weeks, these might be the symptoms and causes:

Rotator Cuff Injuries: Tears or strains in the muscles and tendons of the rotator cuff,

Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis): Stiffness, pain, and limited range of motion in the shoulder joint.

Shoulder Impingement Syndrome: Compression of rotator cuff tendons between bones in the shoulder.

Shoulder Arthritis: Degenerative joint disease causing pain, stiffness, and inflammation.

Bursitis: Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion the shoulder joint.

Shoulder Instability: Loose ligaments or torn tissues leading to an unstable joint.

Tendonitis: Inflammation of the tendons in the shoulder, often due to overuse or repetitive movements.

Fractures or Dislocations: Traumatic injuries resulting in bone fractures or joint dislocations.

Nerve Compression: Pinched nerves in the shoulder or neck region causing pain and discomfort.

Referred Pain: Pain originating from other areas of the body, such as the neck or upper back, but felt in the shoulder region.

Stiffness and pain that does not go away for months/years; causes can be osteoarthritis/rheumatoid arthritis/frozen shoulder.

Pain worst on movement; causes can be tendonitis/ bursitis/impingement.

Pain on the top of the shoulder; causes can be torn ligament/shoulder dislocation.

Sudden intense shoulder pain where you cannot move your arm; causes can be broken bone/ruptured or torn tendon/ dislocation.

Treatment

For self management and to promote faster healing, you should:

Try to stay active and do gentle shoulder movements

Rest your arm in your lap on a cushion

Try to have your shoulders back and stand up straight.

Use pain relief medication e.g. ibuprofen or paracetamol.

If your shoulder pain has been persisting for more than 2 weeks, book a video consultation with a clinician; they can diagnose and prescribe medication for you. They may refer you back to your own GP if further tests are required.

Go to accident and emergency, if you have the following which maybe signs of dislocated or broken bone or torn ligament or tendon:

You cannot move your arm

Pain is sudden or very painful shoulder

Pins and needles that are persisting

Your shoulder or arm is swollen or has changed shape

No feeling in shoulder or arm

Pain started after an fall or injury

Your shoulder or arm is cold or hot

You feel you have fever or are unwell

Develop sudden pain in both shoulders.
