What is a Wasp or Hornet sting?

Wasp or hornet stings can be painful and, in some cases, lead to severe allergic reactions. Both wasps and hornets are types of stinging insects, and their stings deliver venom that can cause immediate pain, swelling around the bite, and other symptoms for up to one week, which is not anything to worry about as it is a minor reaction. If you experience a major anaphylaxis reaction, which includes swollen face, difficult breathing and dizziness, call 999 immediately.

What is the difference between a Wasp and Hornet Sting?

Most insect bites and stings diminish after a few hours or days and can be treated with over the counter medication from any pharmacy:

Wasp Sting:

Wasps are generally more aggressive and can sting multiple times because their stingers do not have barbs, allowing them to sting repeatedly without losing their stinger.
The venom from a wasp sting is primarily composed of histamine and other chemicals that cause pain and swelling at the sting site.

Hornet Sting:

Hornets are a type of large wasp and tend to be more aggressive, particularly when defending their nests.
Hornet stings are often more painful than wasp stings due to a higher concentration of acetylcholine in their venom.
Like wasps, hornets can sting multiple times.

What are the symptoms of a Wasp or Hornet Sting?

The following are the symptoms:

Immediate Pain:

Sharp, burning pain at the sting site.

Redness and Swelling:

The area around the sting may become red, swollen, and warm to the touch.

Itching:

The sting site may become itchy as the swelling subsides.

Hives:

Some people may develop hives (raised, itchy welts) around the sting site or elsewhere on the body.

Anaphylaxis (Severe Allergic Reaction):

In rare cases, a sting can trigger anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction. Symptoms include:
- Difficulty breathing
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Rapid pulse
- Dizziness or fainting
- Nausea or vomiting
- A feeling of impending doom

Note: Anaphylaxis requires immediate medical attention. If someone shows signs of a severe allergic reaction, call ambulance straightaway or present to local accident and emergency.
