Sertraline Side Effects: What the Latest Warning Means for You

11 May 2026

Hello there! If you’ve come across recent headlines about a warning issued to people taking sertraline during the UK heatwave, it’s completely natural to feel concerned. You might be thinking:

  • What is this side effect everyone is talking about?
  • Am I at risk?
  • Do I need to do something right now?

And most importantly: Is it safe to continue my medication? Let’s walk through this carefully because while the situation does require awareness, it also requires clarity, not panic.

What Is the “Little-Known” Side Effect Being Reported?

Recent discussions and media coverage are referring to a specific concern: Sertraline may affect how your body handles heat. This is linked to:

  • impaired thermoregulation (body temperature control)
  • increased sweating (hyperhidrosis)
  • higher sensitivity to heat

What this means in simple terms: During hot weather, your body already works harder to stay cool. Sertraline may:

  • make you sweat more
  • make you feel hotter than usual
  • increase fluid loss

In most cases, this is manageable. But in certain situations, it can increase the risk of:

  • dehydration
  • heat exhaustion
  • feeling faint or dizzy

Why This Matters More During a Heatwave

The UK is currently seeing:

  • rising temperatures
  • sudden weather shifts
  • increased exposure to heat (commutes, travel, outdoor time)

Combine this with medication that affects heat regulation: And the body may struggle to balance itself efficiently.

Who Is Most at Risk Right Now

While not everyone will experience issues, some groups should be more cautious. You may be at higher risk if you:

  • are on a higher dose of sertraline
  • already experience excessive sweating
  • work long hours outdoors or commute heavily
  • are not drinking enough fluids
  • feel fatigued or unwell

Working professionals (especially in London) are particularly exposed due to:

  • long commutes
  • packed schedules
  • limited hydration breaks

Symptoms You Should NOT Ignore

This is the most important part. Watch for:

  • excessive or unusual sweating
  • dizziness or light-headedness
  • confusion or difficulty focusing
  • feeling overheated even in moderate temperatures
  • fatigue that feels different than usual

Seek urgent help if you experience: Call 999 immediately

What You Should Do Right Now

  • high fever
  • severe confusion
  • fainting
  • inability to cool down

If you’re taking sertraline:

✔ Stay well hydrated
✔ Avoid prolonged heat exposure
✔ Take breaks in cool environments
✔ monitor how your body feels

Most important: Do NOT stop your medication suddenly

Stopping sertraline without guidance can:

  • worsen symptoms
  • cause withdrawal effects
  • impact your mental health

Very efficient and friendly service. I had an UTI which happened on a bank holiday weekend so all pharmacies were closed and desperately needed a prescription for antibiotics to get it from 24/7 chemist so I filled in the form online and they called me back 30 minutes later and I had my prescription emailed to me within minutes! And the lady on the phone was very friendly and really helpful! Definitely recommend.

The doctor has saved me on multiple occasions when I fell poorly on a day when the appointments for my GP were all gone or on a weekend where I didn’t have the willpower to sit in A&E for 8 hours plus. The consultation fee was more than justified to have a private consultation over the phone or via video rather than be stuck poorly at home. The Dr was very polite, caring and professional, she helped me get the medication I needed on the same day, so I could relieve my symptoms and get better. Get value for money, A+ thank you.
